12 Vital Characteristics Of A Christ-Centered Marriage.

In this post, I will show you the 12 characteristics of a Christ-centered marriage that will remind you what a Christian marriage is all about.

It’s just a matter of fact that if you are in a godly marriage as a Christian wife or Christian husband, your marriage must reflect the character of Jesus Christ and His church.

With that said, let’s discuss the 12 must-have characteristics of a Christ-centered marriage that will be present if your biblical marriage is founded on Christ Jesus.

12 Traits Of A Christian Marriage.

Below are the 12 vital traits that your Christian marriage will have if God is the center and foundation of your marriage as a Christian couple.

  • Heaven-Focused.
  • Practices Forgiveness.
  • Respect For Each Other.
  • Godly Submission.
  • Filled With Agape Love.
  • Free Of All Forms Of Abuse.
  • Faithfulness.
  • Jesus Is the Center.
  • Glorifies God.
  • Has All 9 Fruits Of The Spirit.
  • Prayer.
  • Healthy Conflict Resolution.

1. Heaven-Focused.

Being heavenly-minded as a married couple in your marriage relationship is one of the traits your Christian marriage will have if Jesus Christ is the center of your marriage.

Sadly, most marriages are leading many to hell considering how toxic, abusive, and unhealthy most marriages are including those that claim to be Christian which is a tragedy indeed.

As a married godly couple, you need to make heaven your ultimate goal so that you can spend eternity together in heaven when all is said and done with your earthly lives. Won’t that be beautiful?

If your marriage is Christ-centered, getting to heaven will be your ultimate goal which should be the case. Otherwise, what meaningful benefit will your marriage be if you don’t end up spending eternity together in heaven?

2. Practices Forgiveness.

Forgiveness as commanded in Ephesians 4:32 is another thing that will characterize a Christ-centered marriage which will show you truly love each other.

If you can’t forgive your spouse for the offenses they committed against you, it clearly shows God’s love for your spouse is absent.

You need to understand that none is perfect and we all have flaws. Hence, we all need God’s grace and forgiveness. If you truly love your spouse dearly, you will easily forgive them of all their offenses.

3. Respect For Each Other.

If your marriage is founded on biblical principles, you will respect each other. In Ephesians 5:33, Christian wives are admonished to revere and respect their husbands.

This will be the case if you are truly a Christian wife who dearly loves her husband. Otherwise, if you can’t respect your husband with whom you live and share the same bed, who are you going to truly respect in this life?

Conversely, as a Christian husband if you truly love your wife you will honor her as commanded in 1 Peter 3:7. If you can’t honor your one and only dear wife you live with, which woman are you going to truly honor in this life?

4. Godly Submission.

It’s just a matter of fact that if you are truly a godly wife in a godly marriage, you will submit to your husband in love as you do unto the Lord as commanded in Ephesians 5:22,23.

It’s so sad that many so-called Christian women and wives view biblical submission as something unpleasant and degrading. If you do that, it shows a rebellious Jezebel spirit is in you that you need to repent of.

Otherwise, if you have the Spirit of Christ Jesus in you, submission isn’t something you will find degrading. After all, if you truly love your husband as you say, why not submit to him?

5. Filled With Agape Love.

Agape love that 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 talks about in the New Testament is another characteristic that your Christian marriage will have if Jesus Christ is the center of it.

The love we are talking about here is the selfless love that will enable you to selflessly love your spouse the way God expects you to without expecting anything in return.

Lack of agape love is the reason why marriages are breaking down and ending in divorce even in church circles. Everyone nowadays is about themselves, not what they can selflessly give to their partner.

If agape love is present in your marriage, divorce will not be an option and you will put the needs of your spouse above your own which isn’t common sadly among many married couples.

6. Free Of All Forms Of Abuse.

Being free of all abuse forms be it physical, emotional, verbal, or financial is another trait that will characterize a Christ-centered marriage.

There is no way your marriage will be abusive if God is truly the center and author of your godly marriage. You need to understand that true love that’s of God doesn’t hurt or abuse the other.

If your spouse is abusive in any way, just know they are not saved at all and they don’t truly love you. Otherwise, how can you say you love your spouse and be abusive to them like an animal simultaneously? God forbid.

7. Faithfulness.

In a Christian-centered marriage, you will be faithful to each other in all things as husband and wife. Implying that you will not have any dirty secrets or skeletons to hide from each other.

It’s so amazing that some people find it hard to be faithful to their spouses which is why we are hearing a lot of affairs and infidelities even among Christian couples in the church.

How can you say you love your spouse and cheat on them at the same time? It makes no sense to me but sadly, that’s the reality of many marriages today.

If you truly love your spouse, you won’t cheat on them in any way be it financially, emotionally, or by giving yourself sexually to another person who isn’t your lawfully wedded spouse (Hebrews 13:4-6).

8. Jesus Is The Center.

Jesus being the center is the epitome of any Christ-centered marriage which will be the case with your Christian marriage if Jesus Christ is the foundation of it.

Being Christ-centered is what defines a Christ-centered marriage in the first place. If Christ Jesus isn’t the center of your marriage, then it won’t be Christ-centered.

This will explain why your marriage is the way it is. All the marriage breakdowns you and I are witnessing in society and church, sadly is a symptom of Christ not being the center of most marriages.

9. Glorifies God.

The other trait of a biblical marriage that’s centered on Christ is it will ultimately glorify God which is what your godly marriage should ultimately aim for.

You can glorify the Lord in your marriage by living according to godly principles concerning Christian marriage relationships for married couples.

If your marriage is according to bible principles, you won’t do things that will not glorify God in your marriage such as infidelity, or being unfaithful to your spouse in any way.

Marital fidelity is what will define your marriage if it’s Christ-based. Hence, you won’t think of being with someone else other than your spouse as that will displease the Lord.

10. Has All 9 Fruits Of The Spirit.

Having all the 9 fruits of the Spirit Galatians 5:22,23 talk about such as love, joy, longsuffering, kindness, gentleness, peace, meekness, goodness, and forbearance is what sums up a Christian marriage.

It’s the one major thing that differentiates Christian marriages from worldly unhealthy marriages that don’t have Christ Jesus at the center or directing them. It’s why most of them are toxic and abusive.

The 9 fruits of the Holy Spirit talked about above are what will enable you to love and treat each other with kindness the way you ought to. It’s also why there will be no abuse of any kind in your marriage.

11. Prayer.

Prayer will be another vital trait that will characterize your marriage if it’s Christ-centered. You need to understand that prayer is crucial to having a strong unbreakable marriage.

The way many marriages are breaking down nowadays must be a gruesome reminder to you as a married couple as to why you must not put prayer on the back burner in your marriage lest your marriage be another failed statistic.

A couple that prays together will be together in all situations and won’t think of leaving each other. You need to know Satan is on the prowl attacking many marriages especially those with weak prayer lives.

12. Healthy Conflict Resolution.

Last but not least, healthy conflict resolution is another trait your Christian marriage will have if it’s truly Christ-centered.

Sadly, many marriages have poor conflict resolution skills explaining why couples in these unhealthy marriages are always fighting and shouting at each other abusively with hurtful words.

You need to understand even as a Christian couple of faith, marital conflicts will come in your marriage but how you resolve them is what makes a difference.

As a Christian couple, you won’t shout, yell, insult, and scream at each other during disagreements. Rather, you will understand that it’s not you against each other but both against the problem.
