13 Characteristics Of A Sinner (That Gives Them Away.)

There are many characteristics of a sinner that will help you know if someone is still a sinner or not and this post will list 13 major ones.

It’s just a matter of fact that if someone is a sinner, that person will exhibit certain traits that are consistent with a person who isn’t saved yet.

By the end of this article, you will know all the 13 characteristics of a sinner that will help you identify them as well as helping you know if you are one of them, too.

13 Major Characteristics Of A Sinner.

Here are the 13 major characteristics of a sinner or wicked people that will always give them away and help you know that there are not true Christians on their way to heaven.

  • Lives In Sin.
  • Wicked.
  • Proud.
  • Deceit.
  • They Are Immoral.
  • Love Their Sin.
  • Walk After The Flesh.
  • Hates Holiness.
  • No Eternal Life.
  • Self-Centredness.
  • Blind Folded.
  • Ungodly.
  • Exceedingly Sensual.

1. Lives In Sin.

This is one of the major characteristics of a sinner and what makes sinners who they are. Sinners enjoy living in sin and doing all sorts of evil things.

Sin is the daily bread of sinners and can’t go a day without because of the sinful nature of their heart which makes them love their sinful lifestyles in the first place.

A sinner can only stop living in sin and escape God’s divine wrath sin brings on one’s life by repenting and forsaking their evil ways to obtain grace, mercy and pardon for their sins.

If you are still living in sin, you need to stop by giving your life to Jesus Christ so that He can set you free from sin before it destroys you irrevocably without mercy.

2. Wicked.

Sinners are wicked and do all sorts of evil things towards others because their hearts are evil and corrupt from the inside.

Wickedness is the order of the day in the life of a sinner that is why you must not be surprised by people who do unimaginable wicked things in society and to other people.

They do that because it’s their inherent nature to do evil as they are children of the devil who is the father of all wickedness as we know it (1 John 3:8).

If you are a wicked person, you need to repent right now and forsake your wicked ways because sooner or later, your wickedness will catch up with and it won’t be pretty because though the wicked join hand in hand, they won’t go unpunished (Proverbs 11:21).

3. Proud.

Pride is also one of the major characteristics of a sinner. Sinners will always want to exalt themselves above other people and God’s word.

This is demonstrated by the prideful sinful lifestyles they live in and they go as far as exalting sin in their lives thinking that there will be no consequences for their evil actions.

All sinners have an inherent sinful pride they get from their father, the devil that makes them not want to submit to our Lord Jesus Christ and surrender their sinful lives to Him.

But Proverbs 16:18 warns that pride comes before destruction and if a sinner doesn’t repent of their sins, they will face God’s judgment and be destroyed without remedy in hellfire. What a tragedy.

4. Deceit.

Due to the inherent sinful nature sinners have, deceitfulness is also one of the common traits you will find in a person who hasn’t received salvation in their life.

The heart of sinners is full of deceitfulness and all manner of wickedness just like their father the devil, the father of all deceitfulness that only the Lord can know (Jeremiah 17:9).

Since deceitfulness has to do with misrepresenting the truth and doing things to deceive someone, a sinner will always want to do something to deceive you especially if that person wants to land into trouble.

No wonder these people like telling lies to other people to deceive them which is why you need to be careful with sinners in your dealings with them because they are not your friend and secretly want to rule your life through their deceitfulness.

5. They Are Immoral.

When you say someone is immoral, you simply say that person goes against the accepted biblical moral standards of what’s right or wrong.

And the immoral behaviour of sinners is seen by the immoral lifestyles they live and most of them are involved in sexual immorality and all sorts of immoral things which are abominable in the sight of the Lord.

Immoral people do what they do because their hearts are full of iniquity and their moral fibre has all been eaten up and eroded by sin which makes someone immoral and perverted in all their ways.

If you are immoral, you need to cease all your immoral activities be it fornication, homosexuality, lesbianism, licentiousness etc. and return to the Lord in repentance before it’s too late.

6. Love Their Sin.

Sinners love their sinful lifestyles which is why they take pleasure in doing evil and hate anything pertaining to righteousness because their sinful flesh that loves to sin is what’s controlling them.

The love of sin in a sinner’s heart is the reason a sinner enjoys doing their sin. No wonder if you rebuke such people of their sinful lifestyles using God’s word, they will get angry at you and falsely claim that you are intolerant and judgmental to them.

These are the people John 3:19 talks about. People who love darkness rather than the light lest their evil deeds are exposed and brought to light.

If you say you are a Christian but are still in love with your sin, just know that you are not saved yet and you need true repentance that brings salvation so that the love of sin in your heart is removed and replaced with the love for holiness.

7. Walk After The Flesh.

Paul in Galatians 5:16 encourages all saved Christians to walk after the Spirit and not the former lusts of their sinful flesh that causes one to sin in the first place.

On the contrary, sinners walk after their fleshly desires and anything that doesn’t please their sinful flesh is considered offensive.

A person who walks after their sinful desires of the flesh will always do things that will please their sinful flesh even if what they are doing is sinful. All they care about is pleasing their sinful flesh at any cost.

But as a born again Christian, you must not walk after your former lusts but follow after righteousness by walking after the Spirit and if you are not doing that, it clearly shows that genuine salvation that brings everlasting life hasn’t yet come into your life.

8. Hates Holiness.

Sinners hate holiness because it’s an offence to them just as Proverbs 29:27 says that a person who is just is an abomination to the unjust and vice versa and in like manner, holiness is seen the same way by sinners.

The reason why sinners hate God’s holiness and His holy commandments is that they are against their sinful lifestyles and makes them feel uncomfortable.

As a result, anything having to do with holiness will be viewed with disdain to such people because there are in love with their wicked sinful lifestyles.

Due to the love of sin in their hearts, holiness is an inconvenience to such people and no wonder they love to associate with evil people who support their evil ways.

9. No Eternal Life.

If you don’t have the eternal life that comes after salvation through Jesus Christ, you are a sinner by default because if you are born again, eternal life will be one of the major characteristics you will have.

Eternal life found in Christ Jesus alone is what will enable you to spend eternity with God in heaven when you go beyond the grave and greet eternity.

On the other hand, if you are not saved yet and still a sinner, you have no life in you and when you die, hellfire is where you will find yourself and be for all eternity.

No wonder Christ said in John 3:15 that only those who believe in Him will have everlasting life and those who don’t i.e. unrepentant sinners will be damned eternally in hellfire.

10. Self-Centredness.

Another characteristic you will notice if someone is a sinner and hasn’t experienced the new birth in Christ is that they will be incredibly selfish and self-centred.

It’s just a matter of fact that all human beings are inherently selfish and self-centred. Why is this you may wonder? Well, this is because we are all born with a sinful nature of Adam that makes us inherently selfish.

This self-centredness is manifested in relationships these people have which don’t last by the way because love to such people is all about who you are to them and what they can get from you.

Only the cross of Calvary can eradicate the sinful selfish nature we are all born with that makes us think of ourselves too much and do selfish acts against others without being concerned about their welfare.

11. Blind Folded.

The holy bible in 2 Corinthians 4:4 talks about the god of this world who is no other than Satan himself who has blinded the minds of all unsaved sinners lest they see the gospel of light that brings salvation which in turn bring forgiveness of one’s sins.

Sinners do what they do because the devil has blindfolded their minds so that they see sin as something pleasurable without being aware of the hidden condemnation and destruction sin brings on one’s life both now and beyond the grave in eternity.

If you are blindfolded by your sin, you will see sin as something very attractive and enjoyable to your flesh which loves sin and hates holiness. This is why sinners foolishly boast in their sins while being completely oblivious to the destruction that awaits them beyond the grave.

Only Jesus Christ, God’s begotten Son can remove the blindness sin brings upon a sinner so that a person can see sin for what it is and the eternal destruction it brings on all those who refuse to forsake it.

12. Ungodly.

Ungodly people are simply people who don’t conform to the godly principles of the bible rather take pleasure in living sinful lifestyles.

These kinds of people do all sorts of evil things towards others like slandering others, sowing discord, lying etc. Proverbs 16: 27 sums up the nature of who these people are.

Due to the evil nature of their hearts, ungodly people don’t want anything to do with anything that pertains to godliness but take pleasure in doing ungodly things that please and excite the sinful flesh.

If you are an ungodly person, you need repentance now so that you can receive God’s forgiveness for your sins before it’s too late. Remember, Psalms 1:4-6 warns that ungodly people won’t escape God’s judgment if they don’t repent and it won’t be pretty for them on that day.

13. Exceedingly Sensual.

When you say someone is sensual, you are simply saying that person is heavily influenced by their sinful passions and desires of the flesh especially sexual ones (Mark7:22).

These people are all about what feels good to their flesh and are not interested in hearing and obeying God’s word because it’s against the sensual nature of their sinful flesh.

And sensual people are usually sexually immoral people due to the lust vigorously boiling in their hearts and aren’t afraid to unveil their nakedness to someone who isn’t their lawfully wedded spouse (Ephesians 4:19).

Sensuality is the reason why so many people especially youths are involved in sex before marriage which is sinful all because of a lack of self-control for their fleshly desires that are leading them to sin.
