What Really Happens When The Holy Spirit Leaves You?

The question of what happens when the Holy Spirit leaves you is the question most believers ask in Christian circles and this is what this article will address today.

Many things happen when God’s Spirit leaves a person which can be seen both in the Old Testament in the case of King Saul and the New Testament in the case of Judas Iscariot.

And in trying to answer the burning question of what happens when the Holy Spirit leaves you, we will look at the 10 things that immediately happen when God’s Spirit is no longer in you.

10 Cosequnces Of The Holy Spirit Leaving You.

Below are the 10 things that will happen when you fall from grace and if God’s Spirit is no longer in your life anymore to direct you.

  • You Lose Interest In Spiritual Things.
  • You Will Quit Your Christian Faith.
  • You Will Find It Harder To Understand God’s Word.
  • You Will No Longer Desire Righteousness.
  • You Become Self-Centered.
  • You Will No Longer Love The Truth.
  • You Become Insensitive To Sin.
  • You Start Living According To The Flesh.
  • You Face The Danger Of Losing Your Salvation.
  • You Become Ineffective In Ministry.

1. You Lose Interest In Spiritual Things.

One of the first things that will happen when the Holy Spirit leaves you is that you will gradually lose interest in spiritual things, as you will no longer walk after the Spirit ( Galatians 5:16-18).

Instead, you will now start getting interested in carnal things that only please your sinful flesh due to the carnal mind you will now have without the Holy Spirit in your life.

It’s the Holy Spirit in the life of any true believer in Christ Jesus that is responsible for us having a spiritual mind that helps any believer to love spiritual things like God’s word and hat things of the flesh and without it, carnality is what takes over your life.

2. You Will Quit Your Christian Faith.

Your Christian faith will no longer be appealing to you once you no longer have the Holy Spirit in your life as you will find the Christian faith you once held dear to your heart not making sense at all.

This is why when you ask many backsliders about their former Christian faith, they will tell you that faith is a myth and that the bible has so many contradictions, which is why they no longer believe in it anymore.

So, if you used to share your faith with others passionately when you were a believer, that will no longer be that case if the Holy Spirit is no longer in your life. Instead, you will quit your faith altogether and be like the people 1 John 2:9 talks about.

3. You Will Find It Harder To Understand God’s Word.

When you no longer have the Holy Spirit in you to help you understand God’s word, the bible all of a sudden stops making sense to you because it can only be understood and correctly interpreted with the help of the Holy Spirit.

Without the Holy Ghost to help you understand the deep divine things of God found in His Word, the bible will just look like you are reading a newspaper and nothing more at this point.

This is why so many atheists say that the bible doesn’t make sense or it’s full of contradictions. That says so because they have a carnal mind which can’t perceive spiritual things as 2 Corinthians 2:14 wonderfully puts it.

4. You Will No Longer Desire Righteousness.

The thirst and hunger you once had for righteousness the Lord Jesus Christ talks about in Matthews 5:6 will no longer be there if the Holy Spirit is no longer in your life.

This is why you will now find living a holy life filled with godliness, holiness and righteousness of Jesus Christ an impossible thing to do as that desire to follow righteousness you once had when you were a Spirit-filled believer will no longer be there anymore.

Instead, you will now desire to live after the lustful sinful desires of your flesh, as you no longer have God’s Spirit and grace in your life to help you live godly and righteously in this present evil world.

5. You Become Self-Centered.

If the Holy Spirit lives in you, you have a right relationship with God that will make you have the mind of Christ in you that isn’t selfish or self-centred and it’s this mind of Christ Jesus that makes a true believer love others selflessly without any selfish motives.

On the other hand, if you don’t know Jesus Christ personally, or if the Holy Spirit departs from your life, you become self-focused and self-centred which will make you only think about yourself and not others.

And this is the reason why many people are lovers of themselves as Paul predicted in 2 Timothy 3:2 as everyone these days are all about themselves which explains why many relationships and marriages are failing very often.

6. You Will No Longer Love The Truth.

When you no longer have the Holy Spirit in your Christian life, you will no longer love the truth that you will now suppress in your unrighteousness as Romans 1:18 says.

This is why the sound doctrine of God’s word will now become offensive to you and you will no longer be able to endure it as Paul says in 2 Timothy 4:3 due to the itching ears you now have which don’t want to hear the truth which makes you sinful flesh uncomfortable.

Instead, you will now love falsehood, false doctrines or fables from false teaches which appeals to your sinful flesh rather than the truth found in God’s word that will help you make it for heaven when you die.

7. You Become Insensitive To Sin.

Another thing that will happen when you no longer have the indwelling Holy Spirit in your Christian life, is you will become insensitive to sin which you will now love at this point.

This is why when you sin, that conviction and guilt conscience you once had when you sinned will no longer be there which is why now you won’t see any problem with the sinful lifestyle you are living in.

It’s the Holy Spirit that is responsible for convicting us of our sins when we sin as we see in Acts 2:37 so that we can repent of them and when God’s Spirit leaves, you will no longer be the case.

8. You Start Living According To The Flesh.

You will no longer walk after the Spirit as Galatians 5:16 commands all believers to do but will now live and walk according to the flesh because carnality has now hijacked you and taken over your life.

This means that you will now start doing sinful things that please your sinful flesh such as sexual immorality, drunkenness, etc. which is rampant among many young people today including those who claim to be Christians.

Instead of fleeing youthful lusts as 2 Timothy 2:22 tell us to, you will now find pleasure in living in those youthful lusts of the flesh which is why you won’t see anything wrong in having sex before marriage just to please your sinful flesh for a measly five minutes.

9. You Face The Danger Of Losing Your Salvation.

Believe it or not, when the Holy Spirit leaves your life, you will be in danger of losing your salvation and eternal life the Lord Jesus Christ gave you when you got saved if you don’t heed His warnings.

God’s Spirit will always warn you in His soft, loving and gentle voice if you are about to lose your salvation because of the sinful activities you are indulging in.

But if you ignore that warning, you will eventually lose your salvation if the Holy Spirit leaves you due to your stubbornness which is why Ephesians 4:30 tells us not to grieve the Holy Spirit by living in willful sin as it puts your salvation at risk.

10. You Become Ineffective In Ministry.

Last but not least, when the Holy Ghost leaves your life, you will become less effective in your ministry and you will live a defeated Christian life which will result in you being unfruitful in God’s kingdom especially in soul winning.

As we see in the book of Acts in the New Testament, the apostles during the early church were able to do the exploits they did for God’s kingdom because they were endued by the power from on high the Lord Jesus Christ promised them in Luke 24:49.

When you are no longer filled with the Holy Ghost, you won’t be able to do great exploits for God nor will you be effective in your Christian ministry. You will also lack the boldness that will help you overcome the fear of man.

Conclusion.

I hope the above post on the question of what happens when the Holy Spirit leaves you has now given you all you need to know what will happen if God’s Spirit is no longer in your life so that you can avoid doing things that will make Him leave you.

  1. Under your #9 point you mention, “when the Holy Spirit leaves your life, you will be in danger of losing your salvation.” You go on to mention, “you will eventually lose your salvation if the Holy Spirit leaves you due to your stubbornness.” My question is can the Holy Spirit leave and then come back or if He leaves then He never comes back? It makes it sound in your post that there is an opportunity for Him to come back if He leaves.

    • Thanks for your question, dear. Yes, the Holy Spirit will come back if He left you due to your willful sinful lifestyle or backsliding when you truly repent and return to the Lord just as David did in Psalms 51:1-10. I encourage you to read that chapter for further understanding and yes you can lose your salvation eventually because you will not have anything to warn you of your sins which you will now do with impunity which is why we must avoid wilful sin as believers at all costs. Thanks and God bless and let me know if I have clarified you.

    • Ask God to guide you and show you the truth. Indeed there is too much deceit in the world we currently live in which is why you must not just believe anything anyhow. Like your approach as you are not far from God’s kingdom. Godbless

  3. I was saved when I was 21. I attended church, but ended up rejecting god and going into the world. I just didn’t have a good relationship with God. I’m 63 now and have repented. My question is will the Holy Spirit come back to me, as I feel he has left me.

    • If they repent genuinely, they can still be forgiven and they won’t be rejected by God as it’s not too late as that happened to me as well. God bless and may He fully restore you if you backslid just as He restored me.
