5 Characteristics Of The Broad Way (Leading Many To Ruin)

In this post, you are going to discover the 5 characteristics of the broad way leading many into destruction and ruin that makes it different from the narrow way that leads to life where only a few will find it.

Our Lord Jesus Christ talked a lot about the broad way in the new testament in Matthews 7:13,14 where He encouraged us to enter the straight and narrow gate that leads to eternal life.

He further said that this narrow road is so straight and narrow that only a few people will ever find it. I know these words of Jesus Christ are uncomfortable to many people out there.

But you need to understand that the choice of whether to be on the broad way or narrow path that leads to life is all on you and no one else.

Many due to their love of sin in their hearts choose the broad way and reject the narrow way of holiness and righteousness, as they are unwilling to forsake their sinful lifestyles.

Not realizing that the sinful pleasures they are temporally enjoying on their broad path are just leading them to eternal destruction and ruin.

With that said, let us look at the 5 characteristics of the broad way leading many to destruction and why many are on the broad road.

What Is The Broad Way In The Bible?

According to the bible, the broad way is simply a way characterized by sin, unrighteousness, self-indulgence and everything God is against that leads many to destruction (Matthews 7:13).

The broad way is wide because people on that path unlike the narrow way can do as they please even if what there are doing is contrary to God’s word.

If you are on this wide path, you will live a life of sin, perversion, self-indulgence, rebellion, and disobedience to God and you will not want anything to do with God or His word.

5 Characteristics Of The Broad Road.

Below are the 5 characteristics of the broad road which is wide and leads many to eternal ruin and why you must not choose it.

  • It’s Wide.
  • Carnal And Fleshly.
  • Accommodating To All.
  • Characterized By Sin.
  • Leads To Eternal Destruction.

1. It’s Wide.

One of the characteristics of the broad way is that it’s a wide road, which is why many are on it on their way to their eternal ruin and destruction awaiting them when they die.

Jesus Christ tells us in Matthews 7:13 that the broad road is a wide road leading many to destruction and that many are on that path due to various reasons.

The broad way unlike the narrow way is wide because there, you are free to do as you please or what pleases your sinful flesh. This isn’t so when you are on the narrow path that leads to eternal life.

People who are on the broad path live as they please and indulge in various sinful pleasures be its sexual immorality, drunkenness, and all the works of the flesh Galatians 5:19-21 talks about.

When you are on the broad road, sin is what will characterize your lifestyle and you will not want anything to do with holiness and righteousness as it makes your sinful flesh which delights itself in sinful pleasures uncomfortable.

2. Carnal And Fleshly.

Another characteristic that differentiates the broad road from the narrow way is the former is carnal and fleshly while the latter is based on the Spirit.

Implying that people who are on the broad way live according to their sinful fleshly desires by walking after them. In contrast, believers on the narrow path walk after the Spirit and don’t fulfill the sinful desires of the flesh as Galatians 5:16 tells us.

Self-indulgence in various carnal and sinful pleasures of the flesh is very common among people who are on this wide road that leads to destruction. Drunkenness and all manner of moral perversions we seeing society today are all found here.

It’s a wide road where all manner of carnal and sensual people exist who have chosen a life of sin by living after their sinful fleshly desires. On this wide road, it’s also where the works of the flesh as we saw earlier in Galatians 5:19-21 are fully manifest.

Due to the carnal and fleshly nature of the broad road, people who are on this wide road hate spiritual things of God that talk against their sinful lifestyles as they make their sinful flesh uncomfortable.

3. Accommodating To All.

The other thing that differentiates the broad way from the narrow way that leads to eternal life is the former is accommodating to all and all sinful lifestyles while the latter is not so.

On the broad road, anyone can be there. This is why you will find many false religions there with their deceived followers who think that their good works will save them and help them enter heaven without Christ Jesus.

Conversely, the narrow path or the narrow gate isn’t so as it only accepts holy and righteous people who have been genuinely saved and have given their lives to Jesus Christ by placing their faith in what He did on the cross for their salvation.

Jesus Christ tells us in John 14:6 that He’s the way, the truth, and the life and that none can enter heaven or come to the Father except by Him making the narrow way even narrower.

I am sure you have heard many say that Christianity isn’t inclusive and that’s true in some sense as the narrow way was never made to be inclusive to all as sin cannot be allowed there. Whereas in the broad way, all manner of sins and sinful lifestyles are permitted.

4. Characterized By Sin.

The broad way is also characterized by sin and unrighteousness and if you are in such a wide gate, you will live a life of sin void of holiness and righteousness.

Since sin characterizes this path, people who are in it have no interest or desire to follow after righteousness due to their love of darkness rather than the light (John 3:19).

In this broad path, you will find all manner of sins, depravity and moral perversions be it homosexuality, sexual immorality, murder, lesbianism, etc. that God’s word condemns.

The apostle Paul talks of such people who are on the broad road to their destruction and eternal ruin in hell in 2 Thessalonians 2:7-12 who take pleasure in unrighteousness and evil.

On the other hand, you won’t find sin in the narrow way that leads to life. So, if you are not saved yet, you are still on the broad way explaining why you still love sin. If so, you need to repent today and get out of the wide gate before it’s too late.

5. Leads To Eternal Destruction.

Last but not least, the last and worst trait of the broad road is that it ultimately leads to eternal destruction and ruin to all those who are in it in hell prepared for the devil and his angels (Matthews 25:41).

You need to understand that if you choose the broad way of sin, moral perversion, pride, and self-indulgence, you will ultimately have to face the consequences of choosing that road.

And these consequences you have to face due to rejecting the narrow path of holiness and righteousness are eternal ruin and separation from God in the lake of fire when all is said and done.

Implying that if you chose the broad path of sin during your lifetime, you will be punished with everlasting destruction in hell away from the presence of the Lord as 2 Thessalonians 1:9 tells us.

If you don’t want to end up in hell along with all vile and unsaved people of all ages since the world began, you need to forsake the broad way and enter the narrow way by repenting and forsaking your sinful lifestyle today.

Conclusion.

I hope the 5 characteristics of the broad way above will now help you think twice before choosing this path that’s leading many to eternal ruin and destruction in hell.

My prayer is that after reading this by God’s grace is that you stay and not stray from the narrow way that leads to heaven where you will spend eternity with God in everlasting joy.
