How To Overcome The Lust Of The Flesh In 7 Easy Steps

If you are struggling with overcoming the lust of the flesh wreaking havoc in your Christin life, then this post on how to overcome the lust of the flesh is for you.

The struggle of overcoming the flesh is real. In fact, many Christians struggle with overcoming the flesh that is causing them to sin even if they don’t want to.

But this will end today if you are serious about overcoming the flesh and want nothing to do with sin as this post on how to overcome the lust of the flesh will show you below.

What Is The Lust Of The Flesh?

The lust of the flesh is a desire to gratify the sinful desires of the flesh. It is a desire for material things, sexual immorality, and the pleasures of this world.

When we yield to the lusts of the flesh, we are fulfilling the desires of our fleshly nature. This includes eating bad foods, watching pornography, smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, sleeping around, etc.

The term “flesh” refers to our physical body and all that is related to it. When we fulfill these desires through sin, we are living in our old man or sinful nature (Romans 6:6-7).

Fleshly lusts include impure thoughts, sexual sin, and any fleshly desires that are sinful and contrary to God’s word.

What Is The Root Cause Of Lust?

The root cause of lust is the lusting heart. The Bible says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect” (Romans 12:2).

Lust comes from the heart. It is not just a physical problem but an issue of the soul. When we look at someone with lust in our eyes, we are committing adultery (Matthew 5:28).

The Bible teaches us that lust is wrong because it’s sin in God’s eyes and portrays our fallen selfish and sinful depraved nature which is against His own holy nature.

Lust is often associated with sexual sins like adultery or fornication, but it’s not limited to sex. You can lust after money, power, food, or anything else that you don’t have or have enough of.

Our sinful nature is also another main cause of lust. Lust is a sin because it’s an expression of our fallen sinful nature. It’s not something that God wants from us but something that he hates.

Therefore, lust can only be cured and dealt with by Jesus Christ through His blood He shed on the cross that cleanses one from all sin and makes one a new creature with new desires that are holy and pure.

7 Ways To Overcome The Lust Of The Flesh.

Below are the 5 ways that will help you overcome the lust of the flesh so that you don’t obey its sinful desires and passions.

  • Pray Every day.
  • Flee Youthful Lusts.
  • Be Filled With The Holy Spirit.
  • Read & Meditate On God’s Word Daily.
  • Keep Your Eyes On Jesus Christ.
  • Commit Yourself To Holy Living.
  • Recognize The Problem & Seek Help.

1. Pray Every day.

If you want to overcome the lust of the flesh causing you to sin, you need to have a strong and active prayer life in your Christian life.

This implies that you need to pray every day as prayer is a very important spiritual weapon in your Christian arsenal as overcoming the flesh is a spiritual battle because we don’t wrestle against flesh and blood as Ephesians 6:12-18 tells us.

You need to understand that you can’t overcome your sinful flesh by your own carnal strength and power but can only be overcome by prayer and the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

So, if you have been struggling with overcoming the lust of the flesh causing you to commit all manner of sins like sexual immorality and other sins pertaining to the flesh, you need prayer in your life if you don’t have it, yet.

2. Flee Youthful Lusts.

One of the effective ways you can overcome the lust of the flesh is by fleeing all youthful lust and pursuing righteousness instead as 2 Timothy 2:22 in the new testament commands us to do.

Youthful lusts are simply normal cravings of the flesh that lead one to sin which are common among young people. Examples of youthful lusts we are to flee common among young people are sexual immorality, drunkenness, lasciviousness, etc.

Sadly, many young people don’t flee youthful lusts which explains why sexual immorality and all manner of moral perversions are now commonplace in our current generation, especially among young people.

But if you want to overcome your fleshly lusts leading you to all manner of diverse sins as a young person, you need to flee all youthful lusts that have made many young people captive to their sinful desires of the flesh.

3. Be Filled With The Holy Spirit.

You need to be filled with the Holy Spirit if you want to overcome the lust of the flesh as, without Him, you will struggle big time in overcoming the sinful passions and desires of your flesh.

Being filled with the Holy Spirit will help you overcome your sinful flesh because the Holy Spirit is what will enable you to walk after the Spirit and not the flesh causing you to sin as the apostle Paul tells us in Galatians 5:16.

If you are not filled by the Holy Spirit, you will walk after your sinful flesh as God’s Spirit to help you and guide you to walk after the Spirit by grace will not be there to help you do that.

So, if you are struggling to overcome your fleshy desires leading you into sin, it might be a  sign that you lack the Holy Spirit to help you defeat your flesh and if you do, all you need is to ask God to fill you with His Spirit to help you defeat your sinful flesh.

4. Read & Meditate On God’s Word Daily.

Reading and meditating on God’s word daily during quiet time is important in your Christian life if you want to overcome lust. As Psalms 119:11 says, you need to hind God’s word in your heart if you don’t want to stumble into sin.

God’s word is important in your Christian life as a believer because it’s what will help you overcome and put to subjection all the sinful and lustful thoughts and evil desires coming from your sinful flesh through its power.

If you practice the daily habit of reading God’s word daily, you will find it easier to overcome lust because as you read the bible daily, your carnal flesh along with its sinful desires and passions gets crucified in Christ Jesus (Galatians 2:20).

However, if you are not reading God’s word daily, you will be powerless against any temptation of your sinful flesh as the power of God’s word to help you defeat and overcome the flesh will be absent in your life.

5. Keep Your Eyes On Jesus Christ.

The Lord Jesus Christ said in John 10:10 that He came so that we could have life and have it more abundantly which means being free from the bondage of our sinful desires of the flesh that makes us captive to sin.

This means that if we want to find true fulfillment in life, then we need to keep our eyes fixed on Him and His Word at all times instead of looking for satisfaction in things of this world that only gratify the flesh and not our spiritual inner man.

When you have a desire for something sinful such as sexual immorality, ask yourself if this is something God wants you to do or if it’s your sinful flesh speaking.

Keeping your eyes and focus on Christ Jesus our perfect example and author and finisher of our faith as Hebrews 12:2 tells us who overcame the world is all you need to do if you want to have victory over the sinful lusts of the flesh.

6. Commit Yourself To Holy Living.

If you want to overcome the lust of the flesh wreaking havoc on your Christian life, you need to commit yourself to live a holy life filled with holiness and purity as God commands us in Leviticus 11:44 in the Old Testament.

You cannot overcome your fleshly lusts if you are not committed to living a holy life that’s above sin and your sinful fleshy desires.

Sadly, most so-called Christians don’t want to live a holy life because the love of sin is still in their hearts which explains why they are unwilling to part from their sinful lifestyles but take pleasure in indulging the flesh in their sinful pleasures.

So, if you want to stop fulfilling the sinful and evil desires of your flesh, you need to be honest with yourself and God to help you remove any love of sin that may be hiding in your life hindering you from forsaking your sinful lifestyle to follow after righteousness, instead.

7. Recognize The Problem & Seek Help.

The first step to overcoming the flesh or any evil desire to sin is recognizing that you need help and that you can’t overcome the flesh alone in your own strength without God’s grace.

This is especially true if you’re currently struggling with pornography or other forms of sexual immorality and perversions. If so, seek counsel from someone who will listen without judging you and will provide wisdom as well as encouragement.

If you’ve been struggling with sinful addictions of the flesh for too long and don’t feel like you can do it anymore, ask Jesus Christ to help you stop doing what He hates so much and what grieves His heart through His grace.

He wants to heal, free you from the bondage of sin and restore your relationship with Him; He just needs your willingness to let Him do that work in your life, which is why He says in John 8:36 that if He sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Conclusion.
