How To Live A Holy Life In An Unholy World? [+Sermon]

This post today will show you how to live a holy life in an unholy world so that you can be ready for heaven, as, without holiness, you will not enter heaven.

Very often, many ask whether it’s possible to be holy with all the evil and sin we see in this world but this post has some good news for you as it will show you how to live a holy life in an unholy world.

Without wasting much of your precious time, let’s look at the 5 things you need to do to live a holy life that’s unspotted from this present wicked world.

What is Holiness?

The simple definition of holiness is it simply means a state of being holy and morally pure without any sin which is one of the most important attributes of God (Psalms 22:3).

Holiness comes from the Greek word quadowsh, which means two things the first one is to cut or separate while the second meaning is to be morally pure.

Therefore, we can say that holiness simply means to separate and to be set apart for God and if you are living a life of holiness, it simply means that you are separated from sin and unto God.

So, if you are a holy person, you will be set apart for God and have nothing to do with sin which sadly most people who claim to be believers are not.

You must understand that holiness and godliness are not options for Christians but requirements and without them, you can’t enter heaven.

Why God Wants Us To Be Holy?

We are told in 1 Peter 1:16 that we must be holy as He’s holy. Therefore, the primary reason why God wants us to be holy is that He is holy and pure without any spot or dent of sin in Him.

This makes sense because God created us in His own image and likeness which means that we were created to reflect God’s holiness and righteousness in our lives from the very beginning.

But when man fell in the garden of Eden where original sin began, we lost this important attribute of God and became tainted with sin which is why He sent His own begotten Son, Jesus Christ to die for our sins so that we can be cleansed and be made holy and pure once again.

The other reason why God wants us to be holy is that holiness is the only thing that will enable anyone to finally make it for heaven as Hebrew 12:14 tells us.

Since heaven and all its inhabitants thereof are holy, sin cannot be allowed there which is why you need to be holy if you want to make it for heaven when you die because if you are not, forget about being with God in heaven which will be sad indeed.

Why Is Holiness Important?

Holiness is important in your Christian life or Christian faith simply because it’s your passport and highway ticket to heaven as the scripture of Hebrews 12:14 tells of which without, no man shall see the Lord.

In short, holiness is vital in your Christian life because it is what will enable you to be ushered into heaven where you will be forever with God, Jesus Christ, and the redeemed saints of all times since the world began who received eternal life through Christ.

No wonder the Lord Jesus Christ went on further to say in Matthews 5:8 that blessed are the pure in heart as the will see God further emphasizing that you need to have a holy and pure heart to finally see God in heaven which will be wonderful indeed.

So, if you claim to be a true Christian, you need to strive to live a holy life that’s above sin, and with God’s grace, you will do it just as other saints both in the old treatment and the new testament were able to do it even when Christ was not fully manifested yet.

I am sure you have heard some Christians say that you can’t live a holy life but that isn’t true because God cannot ask us to do something He knows we can’t manage to do.

5 Things You Must Do To Live A Holy Life?

Below are the 5 things you need to do to live a holy life and be a holy person that will make holy living possible in your life so that you can enter heaven when you die.

  • Be Truly Born Again ASAP.
  • Be Separate From The World.
  • Read God’s Word Daily.
  • Be Sanctified.
  • Separate Yourself From Evil Influences.

1. Be Truly Born Again ASAP.

The first thing you need to do to live a holy is that you need to be truly born again first so that the new nature of Christ Jesus and the Holy Spirit is imparted to you that will help you to live a life of holiness and righteousness.

You need to be born again because we are all naturally born with a sinful nature that makes us inherently sinful and evil that is why we are more prone to do bad things than good things.

Implying that in our natural sinful state, we can’t be holy as God commands us in 1 Peter 1:16 but when you become born again by fully accepting Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and savior, you experience a new birth with results in the new nature.

It’s this new nature of Christ imparted to you at salvation that will make it possible for you to live a holy life that’s above sin. When you have the new nature of Christ in you, you will now hate the sin you once love and love the holiness you once hated before.

However, if you are not born again with the new birth experience that makes become a new creation in Christ Jesus as 2 Corinthians 5:17,18 tells us, living a holy life will be an impossible thing for you to do.

2. Be Separate From The World.

The second thing you need to do to live a holy life that pleases and brings glory to God is you must be separate from the world.

Paul tells in 2 Corinthians 6:17 that we must come out from among them and be separate implying that we must be separate from the sinful people of the world and the evil systems of this world to be set apart for God.

Earlier we said that to be holy means to be separate and set apart for God. When God’s word says we are to be set apart in our behavior, it simply means that we are not going to act like the rest of the world. We will not behave like them or engage in the things they do.

As Christians, we are a part of the world but not of it. We do not conform to the ways of this world. Instead, we are transformed by being renewed of our minds (Romans 12:2).

How can our minds be renewed so that they don’t think as the world thinks? The answer is by spending time in the Word of God. The more we study His Word and apply it, the more our minds will be renewed and transformed into the way God thinks.

3. Read God’s Word Daily.

If you want to live a godly life of holiness and righteousness that’s free from the evil pollutions of this world is you need to read God’s word daily and be in obedience to it as well.

Reading God’s word will help you not sin as it will act as a lamp to your feet and guide your paths as a Christian so that you don’t stumble. It will also sanctify and purify your soul and spirit from all sin.

That is why the Psalmist David said in Psalms 119:11 that he has hid God’s word in his heart so that he might not sin against God and David hid the word of the Lord in his heart was by reading and meditating on it daily.

But if you don’t read God’s word daily and pray afterward, you won’t know what God expects of you and the things He considers sinful that defiles a person.

This is why reading God’s word and prayer must be your daily ritual in your Christian life if you want to live a life of true holiness that will enable you to go to heaven when you die.

4. Be Sanctified.

The other thing you must to do live a holy life is that you need to be sanctified and to be sanctified simply means to be made holy and set apart for God (2 Corinthians 6:14-18).

It also means the inward removal of the sinful Adamic sinful nature that makes us sin in the first place and it’s this removal of the sinful Adamic nature we are all born with that makes living a life of holiness possible.

And as a Christian, you need sanctification as it’s what will help you live a holy life with ease because if you are not sanctified, you will find it difficult to be a holy person which will explain why you are rising and falling all the time in and out of sin.

Sanctification is a two-way process by that I mean that there is a part you need to do and the part God needs to do which is why we are told to sanctify ourselves and be holy in Leviticus 20:7,8 as the Lord God who’s called us is holy.

This means we have a part to play by separating ourselves from anything that defiles and makes us unholy. Only then, will God do His part by sanctifying us which is done by giving us a new heart and a new spirit He talks about in Ezekiel 36:26.

5. Separate Yourself From Evil Influences.

Last but not least is that you need to separate yourself from evil influences or appearances of evil as 1 Thessalonians 5:22-24 tells us to do so that our very God of peace can sanctify our whole spirit and body preserved unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

This is not always easy because sometimes these unholy influences come from our own family members or friends but you need to be like Daniel in the old treatment who purposed in his heart that he won’t defile himself no matter what.

We have to make sure that the evil and unholy things of the world don’t choke out our spiritual life (Matthew 13:22). Do not be afraid to take a stand for God to live a holy life even when others are not doing so.

Sadly, most people including many so-called Christians don’t abstain from evil appearances such as evil immoral T.V shows that arouse dirty and immoral thoughts in the mind which is why pornography and sexual immorality is rampant even among believers in the church today.

But if you are to be holy in this present evil world, you need to separate yourself from unholy influences as well as abstain from all appearances of evil that defile you.

Conclusion.

I hope the above article on how to live a holy life in an unholy world will now help you live a holy and spotless life that’s unspotted from the evil pollutions of this world so that you can be ready for Christ’s coming.
