13 Characteristics Of The New Nature Of Christ [+ Sermon]

What are the characteristics of the new nature? This is the question you may have in your mind as you have come here and this is what this post will specifically address today.

In Romans 6:6, Paul tells us that when our old self is crucified in Christ, it makes us die to sin so that we can no longer be slaves to sin which our old nature enslaved us into.

And this post will address the 13 major characteristics of the new nature of Christ that one will have if they have experienced genuine conversion in their life which brings about the new birth.

What’s The New Nature?

The new nature is simply the divine nature of God that one receives when they become truly born again and makes one holy as summarized in Colossians 3:10-17.

Implying that one must be first be born of God to partake of this new divine nature that rids off the old nature of sin we are all naturally born with.

And it’s this new nature of God that makes a sinner become a new creation in Christ and to be no longer controlled by the old sinful desires of their flesh (2 Corinthians 5:17).

13 Characteristics Of The New Nature.

Below are the 13 characteristics of the new nature that one will show in their life if they become born again and are spiritually reborn in Christ Jesus.

  • Born Of God.
  • Makes One Spiritually Minded.
  • New Life.
  • Bears The 9 Fruits Of The Spirit.
  • Holy.
  • Overcomes The World.
  • Not Conformed To This World.
  • Ready For Every Good Work.
  • Crucified In Christ.
  • Abounds In Thanksgiving.
  • Patience.
  • Meekness.
  • Dead To Sin.

1. Born Of God.

Being born of God is one of the most important characteristics of the new nature of Christ Jesus in a person who has experienced the new birth.

A person who has the new nature of Jesus Christ in them is a partaker of the divine nature of God which makes that person not sin as the old sinful nature is done away with.

We are told in 1 John 3:9 that a person who’s born of God doesn’t sin because God’s seed of holiness is in that person now so that they can’t sin.

2. Makes One Spiritually Minded.

When you receive the new nature of Jesus Christ after getting born again, you also become spiritually minded which is life and you will no longer be carnal (Roams 8:6).

This means that you will now mind spiritual things that are beneficial to your precious eternal soul and not carnal things that just please your sinful flesh and won’t help your spiritual life at all.

When you receive a spiritual mind that comes with the new nature, your affections will also be on heavenly things and not the things of the earth which are temporal and perishable (Colossian 3:2).

3. New Life.

The new nature of Christ that a sinner receives at salvation when they repent of their sins makes a truly repentant sinner have a new life due to the new birth experience.

2 Corinthian 5:17 tells us that anyone who is in Christ is a new creation and that old things have passed away and that all things have become new.

Implying that anyone who is now in Christ Jesus receives a new life that will be characterized by righteousness and not sin which was due to the old nature of sin that was active in the old life of sin.

4. Bears The 9 Fruits Of The Spirit.

One of the vital characteristics of the new nature of Jesus Christ in a person who’s truly born again is that they will produce all the 9 good fruits of the Holy Spirit found in Galatian 5:22,23.

And these fruits of the Spirit are what will differentiate a truly born again Christian and a fake Christian who’s just merely religious and goes to church every Sunday but with the old nature of sin still active in them causing such people to live in secret sin.

On the contrary, if you are not born again yet with a definite salvation experience in your life, the old Adamic sinful nature we are all born with will still be active in your life that will make you produce the corrupt fruits of the works of the flesh found in Galatians 5:19-21.

5. Holy.

Since the new nature is based on God who is holy and righteous, it, therefore, follows that a person who’s a new creation in Christ Jesus will be holy as well.

We are told in 1 Peter 1:16 that we must be holy because He who has called us is holy and has not called us to uncleanness. Most people think it’s not possible to be holy but that’s false.

And such people think that way because they haven’t yet received the new nature of Jesus Christ in their lives to help them live a life of holiness as the old nature of sin is still active in such people that makes them slaves to their sinful lifestyles and addictions ruining them.

6. Overcomes The World.

Overcoming the world and the evil that’s in it is one of the characteristic traits that will show if a person has partaken of the new divine nature of God 1 Peter 1:3 talks about.

1 John 5:4,5 tells that everyone who is born of God responsible for the new nature overcomes the world because Jesus Christ, too overcame the world setting us a perfect example that all believers are to follow.

But if you are not born of God and with the old sinful nature still active in your life, you won’t be able to overcome the world because you will be carnal in your way of thinking which comes from your old nature of sin in you.

7. Not Conformed To This World.

Our new nature is not conformed to this world the way our old nature was because the former is spiritual while the latter is carnal and only mind things that please and gratify our sinful flesh.

Romans 12:2 tells us that we must not be conformed to this present evil world and its systems but be transformed by the renewing of our minds in Christ Jesus so that we can mind spiritual things that are beneficial to our priceless eternal souls.

And this will be the case if you have the new birth experience in Christ which comes after salvation ad it’s this spiritual birth that brings about the new nature and rids of the Adamic old nature of sin we are all born with.

8. Ready For Every Good Work.

The old nature is not ready to do every good work for the Master; it’s lazy and selfish and doesn’t want to do anything unless there is something in it for him.

But the new man with the new nature loves to serve God because he knows that serving Him is the most profitable thing he can do as well as a vessel unto honour.

2 Timothy 2:21 tells us if anyone purges him or herself from evil, that person will be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, meet for the Mater’s use and prepared for every good work which will be the case if you have the new nature of Christ in you.

9. Crucified In Christ.

Since all believers are partakers of the new nature, it follows that the old self is crucified in Christ so that the body of sin might be brought to nothing so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin (Romans 6:6).

The old self is the old sinful nature. The moment we trust Christ as Savior, we die to sin and our old self is crucified with Jesus along with its sinful passions so that we can now follow after righteousness and not the sinful desires of the flesh.

But even though the old nature has been crucified, it is not destroyed until we go to heaven. It still tries to control us and make us do sinful things.

10. Abounds In Thanksgiving.

Abounding in thanksgiving is one of the characteristics of the new nature that one will manifest if they have it in their life.

Colossians 2:7 tells us that we must abound in thanksgiving which will happen if you have the new nature in you as the old man always likes to complain and is never grateful for anything in his life.

When we complain we are walking in our old Adamic nature. It’s not that we don’t have anything to complain about, but we should be thankful for what we have and then see what God will do with it.

11. Patience.

If you are a person with the new nature of Christ in you, patience will be one of the traits you are going to have which you never had when the old Adamic sinful nature was still active in you before you got born again.

Galatians 5:22,23 tells us that patience and longsuffering are one of the most important 9 fruits of Spirit that anyone who is truly born again with the new divine nature of God in them will have as patience is one of the attributes of God.

Patience is a very important virtue in the life of a Christian because it’s what will enable you to receive the best the Lord has to offer as Isaiah 40:31 wonderfully puts it that only those who wait upon the Lord will renew their strength.

12. Meekness.

If you are born of God, you will also exhibit Christ-like humility in your life as Jesus Christ is meek and humble Himself (Matthews 11:29).

This means that the natural pride that comes with the old nature of sin you were conceived in which makes you naturally stubborn to God will no longer be in your life.

And it’s this meekness that will make you be gentle and quiet in spirit and make you esteem others better than yourself instead of exalting yourself above others. You will also be easy to correct when in the wrong as pride which make you hate correction is no longer in you.

13. Dead To Sin.

Last but not least being dead to sin is also among the important characteristics of the new nature that one will show if they have undergone a new spiritual birth experience.

Romans 6:1-11 tells us that we will be dead to sin if we have the new nature of Christ in us which comes about as a result of us dying in Him.

Implying that all the sins you found attractive while in your old sinful nature will no longer be appealing to you anymore and since Christ is in you, righteousness and not sin is what you will be alive to.
