Importance Of Submission To God [& Why It Matters?]

In this post today, you are going to find out the importance of submission to God’s authority He’s established since the beginning of time in our Christian lives.

There are many reasons why submitting to God or submission to God’s will and purpose for our lives is important. As Christians, we are called to surrender and submit to the Lordship of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ gave us a perfect example of what godly submission is all about as He submitted to God’s will and He did everything God wanted Him to do while on earth.

Just as Jesus Christ gladly submitted to His Heavenly Father, we as well especially if we are believers must gladly submit to God and His will for our lives without any murmurings even if it’s uncomfortable for the flesh to do.

You can’t claim to be God’s child if you don’t live a life of submission and obedience to His word because if you are God’s child, you will live a life of obedience and surrender to God and you won’t do whatever you want.

With that said, let’s find out below the importance of submission to God, why it matters in our Christian lives, and if you are a wife in the case of marriage with references to bible verses in both the old testament and the new testament.

The Purpose Of Submission.

One of the main purposes of submission and surrendering to God is so that we can find peace and freedom knowing that God is in full charge of our lives. When we submit to God, we say yes to God taking full control of our lives.

Submission and surrender to God also bring freedom in Christ Jesus as we can see in the case of the Apostle Paul in the bible who says in Galatians 5:1 that the freedom of Christ that sets us free from the slavery of sin or yoke of slavery.

And this freedom in Christ is only made possible if we fully surrender our lives and our will to Him in humility but if we don’t submit to Him, we will remain in the bondage of our sin.

The other purpose of submission in the lives of all believers is that it promotes humility and keeps us from being prideful and haughty which the Lord hates and helps us to depend on God and not our own wisdom or understanding that can lead us astray.

If we don’t submit to God, we become proud and think that God is unnecessary in our lives which also makes us fail to submit to one another in the Lord as believers.

5 Reasons Why Submission Is Important.

Below are the 5 reasons why submission to God is important which also applies in marriage as God calls all wives to submit to their husband as to the Lord.

  • God Commands Us To Do So.
  • Submission Brings God’s Blessings.
  • So That God Draws Closer To Us.
  • So That God Uplifts Us.
  • So That We Depend On Him.

1. God Commands Us To Do So.

One of the main reasons why we need to submit to God’s authority is because He tells us to do so as He’s the sovereign ruler of the entire universe as Nehemiah 9:6 tells us. If you are a wife, God expects you to submit to your husband’s authority in marriage.

Since God is the ultimate ruler and creator of this universe, we are obliged to submit to His authority He’s established since the beginning of time along with the earthly authorities He’s established on earth as Romans 13:1-7 tells us.

It’s quite interesting that most people including Christians find it hard to submit to God by rebelling against His authority found in His word by continuing to live a life of sin and disobedience.

Most say that no God can tell them what to do or how to live their lives and that they can do whatever they please as if they created themselves or brought themselves into this world.

As long as you are a created being made of the dust of the earth as Genesis 2:7 tells us, you are expected to submit to God’s authority and sovereignty because He’s your creator.

2. Submission Brings God’s Blessings.

The other reason why it’s important to submit to God and the Lord Ship of our Lord Jesus Christ is that it brings abundant blessings in your Christian life if you live in obedience.

You need to understand that you will only inherit certain blessings in your Christian life as a believer if you live a life of submission and obedience to God’s word and authority He established before you were even born.

God’s word tells us in Deuteronomy 28:1-14 that the Lord will bless us abundantly in all we do if we obey His commandments. On the other hand, if we disobey, them, we are told in the bible that the Lord will bring all sorts of calamities to our lives.

This is especially true if you are living a sinful life of disobedience and rebellion against God as God doesn’t bless those who rebel against Him but promises to punish them if they don’t repent.

If you want all manner of God’s blessings be it financial, material, health-wise, or spiritual to overflow in your life, you need to live a life of obedience, which is in full submission to God. Only then will His blessings of all types overtake you.

3. So That God Draws Closer To Us.

Another reason why we need to submit to God is so that He can draw us closer to Him. James 4:7 tells us that we must submit ourselves to God so that He can draw closer to us and resist the devil so that he flees from us.

From the above bible verse, we can see that if we want God to draw us nearer to Him in our lives, we need to submit ourselves to Him by fully yielding ourselves to Him and His will for our lives.

Nevertheless, if we refuse to submit ourselves to God by surrendering our lives to Him, He won’t draw closer to us and He will be far from us.

God’s word tells us in Proverbs 15:29-31 that the Lord is far from the wicked who aren’t willing to submit to Him by repenting and forsaking their wicked ways. Moreover, He’s close to the righteous who yield themselves to Him willingly.

Therefore, if you want God to be closer to you and His presence not to depart from you, give yourself to Him by living a life of obedience, which is in full submission to His authority.

4. So That God Uplifts Us.

The other reason why biblical submission to God is vital in your Christian life is so that God can uplift you because Christian submission to the Lord shows humility and God has promised to exalt those who humble themselves before Him in Luke 14:11.

On the other hand, if you refuse to surrender and submit to God due to your pride, He will not uplift you but has promised that He will bring you down as He has said in Isaiah 2:11.

One such example we can see of God uplifting those who submit to Him is in the case of Jesus Christ who humbled Himself to God’s will and was obedient unto death so that you and I can have salvation and eternal life so that we don’t end up in hell.

For this reason, the scriptures tell us in Philippians 2:9-11 that due to Christ Jesus’ humility, submission, and obedience to God while on earth, He’s exalted Him above everything else be it angels in heaven so that every knee shall bow to Him.

In like manner, if you submit yourself to God’s plan and will for your life as Jesus did, He will exalt you as well to greater heights you never imagined in your life but if you are proud, you will be brought low to nothing indeed just like the devil was.

5. So That We Depend On Him.

Finally, yet importantly, submission to God is important for all professing believers as it promotes dependence on God preventing us from being prideful and thinking that we don’t need God in our lives.

God’s word reminds us in 2 Corinthians 3:5 that as believers, our sufficiency is not in ourselves but in God. if we fully submit and surrender ourselves to God, we imply that we want to depend on God for all our sufficiency and for our needs to be met.

However, if we refuse to submit to God, we are simply saying that we are sufficient by ourselves and that God’s help is unnecessary in our lives and without Him, we can do it anyway despite Jesus Christ telling us otherwise in John 15:5.

The above verse tells us that we can do nothing without Christ being the vine of our lives and us being His branches because branches can’t bear fruits or survive on their own without the vine.

Therefore, our submission to God as believers reminds us that without Him, we are nothing and that we can’t do anything by ourselves except we abide and depend on Him. All Christians in the bible who lived before us were victorious because they relied on the Lord.

Conclusion.

I hope the above reasons on the importance of submission to God will act as a reminder as to why you need to submit to God’s authority in your life if you claim to be His Child.

As believers professing the Christian faith, we are expected to submit to God, or if you are a Christian wife, expected to submit to your husband in marriage as unto the Lord.
