How To Train Your Heart To Love God [In No Time]

In this post, you will learn how to train your heart to love God with all your heart, soul, mind, strength, and might as God commands us in Deuteronomy 6:5 in the Old Testament.

Many things in this world can steal your love for God making your love for God wax cold, which is why it’s necessary that you train your heart to love God.

Without wasting your precious time, let’s find out how to train your heart to love God with all your heart that will help you love God the way you ought to with references to bible verses in both the old testament and the new testament.

7 Ways To Train Your Heart To Love God.

Below are the 7 major ways you can train your heart to love God the way He expects you to if you claim to be a Christian who loves Him.

  • Live A Life Of Obedience.
  • Read God’s Word Daily.
  • Stop Loving The World.
  • Ask God To Cleanse You From All Your Idols.
  • Ask God To Fill You With The Holy Spirit.
  • Ask God To Give You A Clean Heart.
  • Choose To Spend Time In God’s Presence.

1. Live A Life Of Obedience.

Jesus Christ tells us in John 14:15 that if we love Him, we will keep His commandments, which implies that we are going to live a life of obedience to His word found in the bible.

You can’t claim to love God if you live a life of disobedience and have no interest in obeying what God’s word says. So, if you profess the Christian faith, you also need to ensure your life conforms to the scripture.

Otherwise, you are merely deceiving yourself. If you find yourself living in disobedience to God but want to stop doing so, you can pray and ask for God’s grace to help you obey His word.

Obedience is key in your Christian life if you claim to be God’s child as obedience to God’s word is one of the litmus tests that will clearly show that you understand what loving God is all about.

2. Read God’s Word Daily.

One of the ways you can train to love God with all your heart if you profess the Christian faith is to develop a daily habit of reading God’s word during your quiet time.

Doing so will help you draw closer to God and make your heart gradually start wanting to read His word daily to know Him better so that you can have a close intimate relationship with God that is deep and fulfilling.

If you begin to love reading God’s word daily, your love for God and hatred for sin will naturally grow as time goes by. The other benefit is that His word as Psalms 119:11 tells us is that it will act as a lamp to your feet to keep you from stumbling.

Most Christians, sadly, are too lazy to read their bibles daily but can spend countless hours on social media, which explains why their Christian lives, are struggling and becoming lukewarm in their faith. This ought not to be so dear saint of God.

3. Stop Loving The World.

The other important thing you can do to train your heart to love God is by training your heart to not love the world nor the things that are in this world that have gripped the hearts of many.

We are told in 1 John 2:15-17 tells us that we must not love the world nor the things that are there in because if we do so, the love of the Father is not in us as our hearts are in the world.

You need to understand that you can’t love God and the word at the same time. It’s either one or the other because you can’t serve two masters at the same time as Jesus Christ reminds us in Matthews 6:24.

If you love the world, you will act according to the world and the things of this world will be more interesting to you than the things of God. So, if you want to love God wholeheartedly, remove the love of the world from the throne of your heart.

4. Ask God To Cleanse You From All Your Idols.

If you are to love God with all your heart, you need to ensure that your heart is free from any idols that may be making you love them more than God. An idol is anything that you love or value more than God.

Idols can come in various forms, which can be in the form of money, riches, your job, relationships, etc. that you may be putting above God and your love for Him.

The Lord promises us in Ezekiel 36:25 that He will sprinkle clean water on us if we yield ourselves to Him, which will cleanse us from all our filthiness and idols in our hearts so that we can love Him the way we ought to without any competing loyalties.

So, if you think that you may be having idols in your heart hindering you from fully loving God the way you ought to as commanded in Mark 12:30, all you need to pray for the Lord to cleanse you from all your idols in your heart hindering you from loving Him.

5. Ask God To Fill You With The Holy Spirit.

Asking God to fill your heart with His Holy Spirit that guides one into all truth as John 16:13 tells us is another thing you can do in your Christian life to train your heart to love God as He helps us have a renewed spiritual mind that is conformed to loving God.

The presence of the Holy Spirit in your Christian life is what will enable you to love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and might as He conforms your inner man or mind to the likeness and character of our Son, Jesus Christ.

If you are without the Holy Spirit in your life, loving God with all your heart, soul and mind will be more difficult because naturally, our sinful flesh hates the things of God and only like doing carnal things that please itself as it can’t please God.

However, if the Holy Spirit is in your life, you will have the desire and taste for spiritual things such as bible study or prayer which will be more enjoyable for you to do as God’s Spirit is helping you walk after the Spirit and not the flesh as Galatians 5:16 tells us.

6. Ask God To Give You A Clean Heart.

Another thing you can do to train your heart to love God in a practical way not just in worship is by asking God to create in you a clean heart that’s free from sin as the Psalmist David wonderfully puts it in Psalms 51:10-12.

You need to understand that you can’t truly love God with all your heart if your heart is still defiled by sin as sin makes us naturally hate God and everything He stands for especially the biblical truth that talks against sin.

If sin or the old nature of sin that makes your heart naturally evil and love sinful things isn’t dealt with, you won’t be able to find room in your heart to love God as it will all be taken up by sin and as you know a sinful heart only knows how to love sin and nothing less.

Therefore, if you feel that your heart is still unclean and defiled by sin, ask the Lord Jesus Christ to cleanse it from all sinful desires and the Adamic sinful nature that makes your heart crave evil things and not love the things of God.

7. Choose To Spend Time In God’s Presence.

Finally, yet importantly, developing a habit of being in God’s presence be it in church during worship or during your quiet time is the best and most practical way you can train your heart to love God.

The bible tells us in Psalms 122:1 that King David was glad to be in the house of the Lord where He can worship Him. The same must apply to you if you claim to be a true believer.

This implies that going to church to worship God and to listen to His word must be what excites you the most as a Christian more than anything else in this world because what could be more blessed in this life than to spend time in God’s presence?

If you train your heart to be glad in the presence of the Lord, you will gradually find yourself spending more time in God’s presence be it in prayer or worship and this love to be in God’s presence to hear from Him will just grow over time.

Conclusion.

I hope the above post on how to train your heart to love God will now help love God with all your heart, soul and mind the way you ought to as God’s child.

Loving God wholeheartedly is the greatest commandment God has given us which also influences the way we love others which is why you must love God first for you to truly love others.

    • Thanks for your comment and my prayer is you stop struggling to love God wholeheartedly. If you want to love God in no time, just surrender and submit your life and will totally to Him and be willing to let go of anything hindering you from loving God which could be sin, the love of self or the love of this world. Hope that helps and God bless.
