And by the end of this post, you will have known the 11 major characteristics of a true convert that will help you know if someone is truly converted to Christ or not.

What Is True Conversion? Biblical Definition.

The biblical definition of true conversion is simply the kind of conversion that makes one live a changed life that shows fruits of righteousness and true repentance.

Implying that when you become a true covert who has been saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, you will live a changed life and no longer live in your old sinful lifestyle of sin.

If you used to steal, lie, commit sexual immorality, get drunk or commit many other sins that will no longer be the case when you become a new creation in Christ (2 Corinthian 5:17).

11 Characteristics Of True Conversion.

Below are the 11 major characteristics of true conversion that will help you know if you are truly saved and on your way to heaven or not.

  • Genuinely Saved.
  • Bear Good Fruits.
  • Live A Godly Life.
  • Abide In Christ.
  • Hate False Teachings.
  • Hate Sin.
  • New Life.
  • New Character.
  • New Nature.

1. Genuinely Saved.

Genuine salvation and eternal life are one of the major characteristics of a true convert that signify true conversion from sin to righteousness.

The salvation that Jesus Christ has granted to everyone for free by dying for our sins is the most important thing one can ever have as it saves one from the wrath to come (1 Thessalonians 1:10).

If you are a true convert, you will have a genuine and definite salvation experience that will change you from the inside so that you can become a new creature with the new nature of Jesus Christ in you that Paul talks about in 2 Corinthians 5:17.

On the other hand, if you are a false convert lacking genuine conversion, you won’t have a definite salvation experience that transforms you from the inside which is why you won’t show any change or good fruits of repentance in your life that come with genuine salvation.

Having a definite salvation experience that comes after genuine repentance and conversion is what differentiates a true convert from the false convert even if the latter may try to pretend to be the former.

2. Bear Good Fruits.

Jesus Christ says in Matthews 7:15-20 that every good tree will bring forth good fruits and a bad tree will bring forth bad fruits according to their nature.

If you are a true convert with genuine conversion in your life, you will bear good fruits of repentance, the Holy Spirit and righteousness in your Christian faith that a false convert just simply can’t produce.

You will bear good fruits if you are a true convert or true Christian because you have the new nature of Jesus Christ in you that makes you bear good fruits of righteousness and makes you desire to follow after righteousness and hate sin.

Remember, you can only bear these good fruits of the Holy Spirit found in Galatians 5:22,23 if you have only experienced true conversion in your life that transforms you from the inside through the transforming power of the Holy Spirit.

But if you are a false convert lacking true conversion, you won’t bear the good fruit of the Holy Spirit, no matter how hard you try to be good in your carnal strength.

3. Live A Godly Life.

Another characteristic that will show if someone is a true convert, is that they will live a godly life and will no longer live a life of sin as they have a new nature of Christ in them (Ephesians 4:24).

You will be able to live a life of godliness and righteousness because of God’s grace Titus 2:11 talks about that bring salvation which has appeared to everyone that will teach you to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts.

Living a godly life is one of the major characteristics that will show if you are a true Christian and on your way to heaven and if you are not doing that, then you are a fake Christian and not a true Christian at all my dear.

Remember, if you don’t live godly in this present evil world and keep yourself unspotted from it, you won’t be able to enter heaven which will be unfortunate indeed I hope you are not that person.

But if you are a false convert, you won’t have any interest in living a godly life due to the love of sin still present in your unconverted sinful heart that makes you see the pleasures of sin attractive and appealing.

4. Abide In Christ.

If you are a true convert who has experienced true conversion in your life after getting saved, you will abide in Christ as He abides in you.

In John 15:1-11 Jesus Christ tells anyone who claims to be a believer in Him that they must abide in Him and that He’s the vine and we as His followers are the branches.

One thing you need to know is that if you don’t abide in Jesus Christ, you won’t do anything meaningful with your life or be fruitful in His kingdom as branches can’t bear fruits on their own.

Our Lord Jesus Christ is that vine you need to abide in if you want to bear good fruits in your life and be fruitful in God’s kingdom.

And this will happen if you are a false convert as you don’t have the character of Christ in you to help you produce good fruits.

5. Hate False Teachings.

Another trait that will show that you are a true Christian who has experienced true conversion in your life is that you will hate false teaching that is rampant in many false lukewarm churches today that don’t teach the whole counsel of God’s word.

You will hate false teachings from false prophets and false teaches because if you are a genuine covert, you will have a different spirit dwelling in you.

And that spirit will be the Spirit of truth Jesus Christ promises in John 16:13 that will guide you into all truths and make you hate falsehood or false teaching that are not in line with the scriptures I the bible.

But if you are a false convert, you will love false teachings which just make your sinful flesh feel good and don’t help you grow spiritually or in the things of God.

In this day and age where falsehood is rampant in many churches, you need to be careful to whom you listen to if you are a true Christian so that you don’t get deceived by these false teachers that the bible warned in 2 Peter 2:1,2.

6. Hate Sin.

Hating sin is one of the major characteristics that will show if you are a true convert but if you are a false convert with false conversion you won’t hate sin.

Hating sin is what true conversion is all about because you can’t say you have experienced true conversion in your life if you are still in your old sinful lifestyle.

Most people are quick to claim that they are converted Christians but are still living in sin. They do so because these people have only experienced false conversion which is why they don’t show change in their lives.

We are told in Romans 12:1,2 that we need to be transformed by the renewing of our minds which can only happen with true conversion and not false conversion which bears no good fruit.

So, if you claim to be a true convert, you will surely hate sin and love righteousness instead which will be reflected by the godly lifestyle you are living.

7. New Life.

True conversion will always be accompanied by a new life which is made possible by the new birth in Christ Jesus one experiences when that person becomes genuinely born again by water and the spirit.

This is why 2 Corinthians 5:17 says that anyone who is in Christ is a new creature and that old things have passed away and that all things have become new and this is what true conversion is all about.

In short, you will become a new person with a new life when you become genuinely converted which will manifest by the way you live and this new version of you will now desire to follow after righteousness.

With this new life in you, it means that you will no longer live in your old sinful ways of the flesh that characterized your past sinful life as you have begun a new chapter in your life with Christ.

On the other hand, if you are like many false Christians out there without genuine conversion in their lives, you won’t have this new life.

8. New Character.

When you become a true believer who is truly converted to Christ, your character will also change for the better to reflect that of Jesus Christ.

That old sinful character that comes with your sinful Adamic nature we are all born with will be done away with when you become a true convert (Romans 7:5).

And this is made possible due to the new heart and new spirit the Lord promises in Ezekiel 36:26 and it’s this new heart that will enable you to have a new godly character that will enable you to live a life of godliness.

But if you are not truly saved with a definite salvation experience in your life, you won’t have a godly character in you as your character will be sinful instead to reflect the state of your sinful unregenerate heart.

You must remember that a change in character can only happen when A change of heart happens inside of you. Without this change of heart, your character, too won’t change and if your heart is sinful, your character will be sinful, too.

9. New Nature.

When you become a new creature in Christ after experiencing genuine conversion, you will also have a new nature that will reflect that of God.

In, short, you will now become a partaker of the divine nature of God that 2 Peter 3:3,4 talks about that will transform you into His likeness and image of holiness and righteousness.

We are all born with a sinful nature that makes us do bad things or hurt others which we inherited from our first parents who sinned in the garden.

But when you experience genuine conversion at salvation, this old nature of sin is completely replaced with the new nature of Christ that will make you desire to live righteously and hate the sin you once loved when you had that old Adamic nature of sin.

On the other hand, if you are not a true convert, you will still have this old nature of sin in you and you will continue doing the very same bad things you desperately want to stop doing at all costs.

10. Obey God’s Word.

True converts who have been truly saved from sin will obey God’s word and not live in disobedience to it since that old nature of rebellion sin bring in one’s life has been done away with at salvation.

Now that you are converted and have a new heart of flesh with the stony sinful heart removed which Ezekiel 36:26 talks about, you will now find it easy to obey the commandments of God in the bible you once found offensive and hard to you.

Remember, sin makes your heart hardened, stubborn and rebellious towards God which isn’t a cool thing to do if you ask me honestly speaking.

So, if you see someone being stubborn and disobedient to God’s word, don’t be surprised and wonder why they act like that to God because sin inside their hearts is what’s making them act that way.

This is why if you are still a false convert, you will still have that rebellious nature to God due to the presence of sin in your heart.

11. Lives A Surrendered Life.

Last but not least, if you are a true Christian who has heart has been genuinely transformed from the inside, you will live a surrendered life to Christ.

To surrender in this context simply means to completely stop resisting and giving up your life to Jesus Christ by accepting Him as your personal Lord and saviour. In short, it’s simply letting Christ take charge of your life (Galatians 2:20).

When you are a sinner who is yet to experience genuine conversion, you will have that natural resistance to God and you will try to fight against Him due to sin which is futile by the way as none can fight God and win successfully.

But when you become born again, this natural resistance you once had to God and His word simply just disappears which made you be His enemy as you only resist your enemy.

Instead, you will now find it easy to submit to His will and not the will of your sinful flesh that just made you sin in the first place, anyway.

Conclusion.

I hope the above characteristics of a true convert will now help you understand what differentiates true converts from false converts without any genuine conversion in their lives.
