How Does God Want Us To Behave As Christians?

How does God want us to behave as Christians? What is He looking for in our lives? What kind of conduct does He expect from those who call themselves by His name?

This is a question that every Christian needs to ask himself or herself and it is a question that the apostle Paul answers for us in his epistle to Titus.

The bible is full of references and bible verses in both the Old Testament and the New Testament of how God expects us to behave especially if we claim to be Christians.

God’s word is full of specific rules on how we should behave in any situation and how we should treat each other. This means that we can’t just live however we want like wild animals which is why we have the 10 commandments in the book of Exodus 20:1-17 to guide our lives.

So, to answer the question, “how does God want us to behave as Christians?” let us look at the 7 behavioral conducts that God expects of us especially if we claim to be believers or children of God.

What Is Godly Behavior?

Godly behavior is simply the kind of behavior that conforms to the godly principles of the bible such as holiness, mercy, kindness, love, meekness, humility, gentleness and so on. In Short, Godly behavior is the one that displays the 9 fruits of the Holy Spirit found in Galatians 5:22, 23.

So, for us to behave the way God wants us to, we need to know what godly behavior is which we have just defined above because without knowing what godly behaviour or conduct is, you can’t live a Christian life that God expects you to.

This is why the apostle Paul tells us in Philippians 1:27 that we need to conduct ourselves in a many that’s worth of the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ especially if we claim to be believers professing the Christian faith.

7 Things God Expects Of Us Christians.

Below are the 7 things and conducts God expects of us as Christians in any situation if we claim to be followers of Jesus Christ.

  • To Be Loving Towards Others.
  • To Live A Holy Life.
  • To Display Christian Conduct.
  • To Be Kind To Others.
  • To Show Forgiveness To Others.
  • To Live Lives That Glorify Christ.
  • Be Godly Example To Others In Everything.

1. To Be Loving Towards Others.

Since God is love as 1 John 4:7-10 tells us, he also expects us to love each other just the way He loved us. Do you know the reason why there is so much hate and wars in this world dear saint?

The answer to that question is because humanity has forgotten the second most important golden rule God gave us which is to love your neighbour as yourself but we see the contrary today which is self-centeredness.

This is why Jesus Christ repeated this very second golden rule in Mark 12:31 and went on further to say in John 13:34 that the new commandment He’s given us in the new testament is to love others as He’s loved us.

Sadly, the above commandment in the above bible verse isn’t adhered to even by many people who claim to be Christians as we have become so selfish and full of ourselves, especially in the current generation we are living in.

If only we learned to obey the above commandment, this world will be a way better place to live in and all these wars, homicides, hate, divisions, racism, uprisings and other evils we see in this world wouldn’t even exist at all.

2. To Live A Holy Life.

The other thing God expects of us is to be Holy as He is holy as 1 Peter 1:16 tells us. This means we need to live holy lives that are free from sin.

Most people wonder if it’s ever possible to live a holy life, especially in this evil and polluted world we live in where evil and sin seem to be everywhere.

But, I have good news for you dear reader that yes, by God’s grace, it’s possible to live a holy life in this present evil world because God can’t ask us to do something He knows we can’t do. Don’t listen to people who tell you that you can’t be holy because you can according to God.

And the fact that He calls us unto holiness is a testament that it’s possible to be holy in this sinful world as the grace to do so is available to everyone as Titus 2:11,12 tells us.

All you need to do on your part is the willingness to do so. Sadly most people due to the love of sin in their hearts don’t want anything to do with holiness not because they can’t be holy but the love of sin hiders them from doing so and forsaking their filth.

3. To Display Christian Conduct.

God expects us to behave as Christians. For example, because He is holy, we are to be holy (1 Peter 1:15). Since we have been called to imitate Him, we are to be perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect (Matthew 5:48).

In 2 Corinthians 5:17, Paul tells us that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person and that the old life is gone; a new life has begun in Christ Jesus.

The New Testament in Galatians 5:19-21 lists several things that are incompatible with the lives of true Christians that we cannot do if we have truly become new creations in Christ.

These include sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarrelling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy and drunkenness (see also Ephesians 4:17-32; Ephesians 5:3-8; Colossians 3:5-18).

So, as a Christian or person who claims to be God’s child, you need to display Christian conduct and behaviour in all you do and in all situations implying that you must not behave or act like the heathens who don’t know God.

4. To Be Kind To Others.

Paul tells us in Romans 12:10 that we must be kind and affectionate towards each other with brotherly love and kindness.

This means that God doesn’t want to see hate, strife, divisions, among us that we see even among believers. Sadly, the opposite is the case and because brotherly love and kindness is missing in many people’s lives, this explains why we hate each other so much for no reason.

It’s the reason why we kill each other for the pettiest things that could easily be resolved even among children.

If you love your fellow human being with brotherly love and kindness, you won’t be cruel to others nor will you do unimaginable evil things we all hear about people doing to each other as if they are animals.

Remember, practising kindness to each other doesn’t cost anything and is easy to do if the love of Jesus Christ is in your heart. Kindly be that person who treats others with kindness as this world has enough hate and there is no need to make things worse even further.

5. To Show Forgiveness To Others.

Part of how God wants us to behave is the showing of forgiveness, especially to people who have offended us in one way or the other, which seems to be a challenge nowadays.

The scripture of Ephesians 4:32 tells us that we must forgive others of the wrong they have done to us just as God for Christ’s sake has forgiven us even if we didn’t deserve it.

It is quite amazing that most people including so-called Christians find it hard to forgive others who have wronged them which is why there is so much beef or unforgiveness even among believers in the church today which is sad indeed.

Beef or unforgiveness is the reason why people are ready to kill each other over petty offences and most of the homicides or murders you see even in families is because of unforgiveness as unforgiveness is murder in its own right.

So, if you want forgiveness from God, you must also forgive others for their offences as well. Jesus Christ said in Mathews 6:15 that if from our hears don’t forgive others, neither will God in heaven forgive us of the trespasses we commit daily knowingly or unknowingly.

6. To Live Lives That Glorify Christ.

As Christians, God also expects us to live lives that are pleasing and glorifying to Him implying that we must not live to please ourselves but to please and glorify Him.

To live a life that is pleasing and glorifying to God simply means to live a holy life that is unspotted from this present evil world. It implies that you won’t live a life of sin that makes the Lord unhappy as sin grieves Him.

If you want to please God, you won’t have anything to do with sin. Sadly, so many people are full of themselves that is why they could care less about living godly lives that please Christ.

This is why Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians  5:9,10 that we must strive to please God in all we do and not ourselves or our sinful flesh which will only be possible if you have the Holy Spirit in your life that makes you to walk after the Spirit, not the flesh.

Most people including many so-called Christians are still walking in the flesh that is why they find it hard to live godly lives that please the Lord.

7. Be Godly Example To Others In Everything.

Last but not least, God expect us to be a godly example to others be it believers or unbelievers in our Christian conduct and behavior so that His name isn’t blasphemed.

Sadly, this isn’t the case with many professing Christians who claim to follow Jesus Christ but live lives that are opposite to the one Jesus Lived causing many people to not be attracted to Christianity anymore due to the hypocrisy they have seen in many so-called believers.

Jesus Christ tells us in Matthews 5:16 that we must let our light so shine before all men so that they can see our good works and glorify the Father who’s in heaven.

This means being a godly example to others in your behavior or Christian conduct, which is why you can’t afford to a hypocrite or behave and act like the people of the world as a believer in Christ.

Endeavour to be a godly example to others in all you do be it in your lifestyle, behaviour or the way you treat others. Let others see God’s love, holiness and kindness radiating in your life like the sun so that others can come to Christ as well.
