What Happens When You Receive The Holy Spirit?

What happens when you receive the Holy Spirit? This is the question most new believers who are new in Christ Jesus ask and want to know when they immediately become born again

The Filling of the Holy Spirit is one of the most important experiences in one’s Christian life. The Holy Spirit is our Helper and comforter, and He performs several roles in our lives.

He gives us power and boldness as we witness our faith to others, He speaks to us and guides us into truth, He convicts us of sin and intercedes for us when we don’t even know how to pray.

The filling of the Holy Spirit is also referred to as Baptism with the Holy Spirit, Empowering of the Holy Spirit, Infilling of the Holy Spirit, Outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and Anointing of the Holy Spirit.

You must note that the filling of the Holy Ghost is a distinct event from Salvation. You are saved when you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and accept Him as your personal Lord and Savior after repentance (Romans 10:9, 10).

Only then after obtaining salvation, will you be filled with the Holy Ghost after baptism, as the Holy Ghost can’t dwell in a sinner as they are defiled with sin.

With that said let’s look at what happens when you receive the Holy Spirit Jesus Christ promised in the new testament in Luke 24:49 so that your Christian faith can be strengthened.

Why Is Baptism Important In A Believer?

At the end of Jesus’ ministry, He gave His disciples His Great Commission. He commissioned them to go into the entire world and preach the Gospel.

The Gospel is the Good News that Jesus came to die on the cross for our sins so that we could be saved by grace through faith in Him. As part of this Great Commission, Jesus also directed His disciples to baptize new believers in water. He told them to:

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit,” (Matthew 28:19).

Baptism is a very important first step for a believer. Baptism doesn’t save you from your sins, but it is a symbol or public declaration that you are now a follower of Jesus Christ and that you have been forgiven of your sins through faith in Him.

Baptism is an outward sign that represents what has happened in your heart as you believe in Jesus Christ for your salvation. It also symbolizes that you are now dead to sin and alive in Christ.

How Do You Receive The Holy Spirit?

In the New Testament, it is written that God gives us freely the Holy Spirit to dwell in our hearts. This is a promise from God to all who believe in Jesus Christ.

The Bible says that God has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness (2 Peter 1:3).

We receive the Holy Spirit when we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. At that moment, the Spirit of God comes to live inside of us.

It is the Spirit who helps us understand the things of God.  In addition, the Holy Spirit empowers us to live a life pleasing to God (1 Corinthians 2:9-13; Galatians 5:16).

In short, you receive the Holy Spirit by believing in the Lord Jesus Christ and repenting of your sins so that you become saved and from there, get the baptism of the Holy Ghost by full immersion in water.

5 Signs You Have Received God’s Spirit.

  • You Become A New Creation By Regeneration.
  • You Receive Power.
  • You Receive Godly Wisdom.
  • You Will Start Living A Holy Life.
  • You Get Adopted Into God’s Family.

1. You Become A New Creation By Regeneration.

One of the main functions of the Holy Spirit in a person’s life is the regeneration and the renewal of our inner man so that he conforms to the image of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Titus 3:5-7 tells us the Holy Spirit is the one responsible for regenerating us from the inside so that we can have the new nature of Christ in us that hates sin and desires to follow righteousness.

Without the Holy Spirit, the regeneration, and the new creation we become if we are in Christ 2 Corinthians 5:17 talks about will not be possible.

You need the inner working of the Holy Spirit in your life to become a new creation in Christ as, without that, you will still be the same old sinner even if you go to church every Sunday.

If you are not regenerated even if you are religious, it’s a clear sign that you haven’t received the Holy Spirit yet in your life to help you become a new creature with a new nature and a new life.

2. You Receive Power.

If you become a true believer or Christian, you will also receive and be endued by the power from on high when you become filled with the Holy Ghost that will empower you for service in God’s kingdom as Acts 1:8 tells us.

The presence of the Holy Spirit empowers Christians to bear witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ (Acts 1:8; 4:31). He enables them to be bold and courageous in their efforts to do God’s work on Earth.

Furthermore, God’s Spirit emboldens all true Christians and believers to speak out against injustice and persecution without fear and encourages them in times of suffering or doubt.

Believers can be rest assured that they will never be alone in their efforts to spread the gospel and live for Christ because the Holy Spirit will always be with them.

However, if you haven’t received the Holy Ghost yet, this power to do great exploits in God’s kingdom will be lacking in your Christian life which is why you will find soul-winning difficult to do if you haven’t been endued with the power from on high yet.

3. You Receive Godly Wisdom.

Another thing that happens when a person receives the Holy Spirit is that they will be endued with Godly wisdom from above which is pure as James 3:17 tells us which guides one into the ways of righteousness.

The Holy Spirit can guide you into all truth and wisdom if you ask Him to (John 16:13). This means that when you need direction or guidance, you can go directly to God through prayer, asking Him for wisdom.

James tells us that if we lack wisdom, we should ask God for it knowing that he will give it generously and liberally (James 1:5).

You must be aware that there are two types of wisdom in this world: one which is pure and Godly which comes from God with the help of the Holy Spirit and the other one which is sensual and devilish which is called worldly wisdom (James 3:15-17).

The wisdom God’s Spirit gives you will guide you into all truth, help you bring forth good fruits of righteousness, and help you know more about God unlike worldly wisdom, which will just help you find new ways of doing evil things.

4. You Will Start Living A Holy Life.

When you receive the Holy Spirit as a believer after receiving salvation, you will also start living a holy life as God’s Spirit and not your sinful flesh which made you sin in the time past is now in control of your life.

This will be made possible due to the new nature and new heart you have received which the Lord promises in Ezekiel 36:26 and it’s this new nature in you made possible by God’s Spirit that will enable you to live a holy life that’s above sin.

If God’s Spirit isn’t controlling your life yet, you will live according to the sinful desires of your flesh which is why you will find it hard to resist sin so that you can be a godly person free from sin.

The Holy Spirit is the one responsible for getting rid of the old sinful nature that makes us inherently sinful and inclined to do evil by helping us put on the new man, the apostle Paul talks about in Ephesians 4:24 that helps us follow righteousness.

Without the Holy Spirit in your life to help you overcome the flesh, you won’t be able to live a holy life that’s undefiled by sin which is why you hear many people say you can’t be holy as God’s Spirit is absent in such people to help them overcome sin.

5. You Get Adopted Into God’s Family.

Last but not least, when you receive the Holy Spirit after getting saved and becoming a truly born-again spirit-filled believer, God’s Spirit will adopt you into God’s family (Romans 8:15).

The Bible tells us in 2 Corinthians 5:17 as we say earlier that anyone who’s in Christ becomes a new creation with the new life. In short, you are no longer classified as a sinner but as a saint and a child of God because you have received Christ into your heart by faith.

Additionally, God’s Spirit will bear witness with your own inner spirit as Paul tells us in Romans 8:16 that you are truly God’s child who’s been adopted into God’s royal family consisting of redeemed saints of all ages. Isn’t that wonderful?

But if you haven’t received the Holy Spirit yet, you won’t know if you have been adopted into God’s family yet as that witness to confirm you are indeed a child of the Most High will not be there.

You must bear in mind that the Holy Spirit will only adopt you into God’s family if you become truly saved after genuine repentance, which brings about salvation.
