What Does It Mean To Be Born Again?

According to the bible, being born again simply means experiencing the new spiritual birth in Christ Jesus through the renewing power of the Holy Spirit that regenerates one’s spirit from the inside (Titus 3:5-7).

Implying that when you become a truly born again Christian, you experience the new birth and a new life, which is a spiritual phenomenon, and not a physical phenomenon as Jesus Christ was trying to explain to Nicodemus in John 3:5.

Being born again means more than being saved. It means becoming a new person in Christ Jesus as 2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us which says that if any man is in Christ, he or she becomes a new creation.

How Do You Get Born Again?

The first thing you have to do to be born again is to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. This belief is the first step in a new relationship with God.

The Bible says in Romans 10:9 that, ‘if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord”, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead; you will be saved (Romans 10:9).

In short, if you want to be born again, you first need to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and what He did for you on the cross as salvation is by grace through faith by accepting Him with all you hear as your personal Lord and saviour as simple as that.

1. Gives You The New Birth.

Having a new birth in the Lord Jesus Christ after receiving salvation at repentance is one of the reasons why it’s important to be born again.

As humans, we are all naturally born with a sinful nature that causes us to do bad things which is why we find that it’s easier to sin than to stop sinning because sin is in our DNA and part of who we are as human beings.

But when you become born again, you experience a new spiritual rebirth with the help of the Holy Spirit that regenerates and renews you from the inside as Titus 3:5-7 tells us.

It’s this new spiritual birth that makes you have the new nature of Christ that makes now start hating sin and start loving righteousness and holiness instead.

Only with this new birth in Christ Jesus which happens at salvation will you be able to stop sinning and doing all the bad things you hate doing.

2. Qualifies You For Heaven.

The above reason why the importance of being born again is emphasized is perhaps the most important reason why you must be born again by the water and the Spirit.

You must understand that, if you are not truly born again with the new birth in Christ Jesus, you can be rest assured that you won’t enter heaven as the Adamic sinful nature you were born with is still active in you.

This is why the Lord Jesus Christ told Nicodemus with assurance in John 3:3-5 that except a man be born again that is to be born of water and the spirit, he will not enter the kingdom of God.

So, if you are not born again yet, you need to be so now because it’s a big deal and the reason why being born again is a big deal is because it’s what enables you to be a righteous person due to the new nature of Jesus Christ you inherit with that new spiritual birth experience.

Only then will you be able to enter heaven as being born again is what enables you to live a holy life that’s above sin as holiness is the only passport required for heaven (Hebrews 12:14).

3. Gives You A New Life.

The other important reason why you must be born again is that when you become born again, you get a new life as the apostle Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 5:17.

This new life is made possible due to the spiritual rebirth you experience in Christ with the help of the Holy Ghost that renews your inner man from the inside.

It’s this new life with the new nature of Christ Jesus in you that makes you a new creation with a new lifestyle that consists of godliness and righteousness as the old nature of sin has been dealt with at salvation when you become born again.

When you have a new life, you will no longer desire to go back to your former sinful lifestyle that was because of the old sinful nature or the old man that came with you with your physical birth.

If you don’t have the new life of Christ in you but claim to be born again, you are just merely deceiving yourself, dear, because isn’t possible to have a genuine encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ and still remain the same old sinner.

4. Gives You A New Nature.

Being born again also bring about the new nature of Jesus Christ in you with is holy and righteous that will now make you start living a life of holiness and not of sin (Colossians 3:10).

Implying that if you are truly born again with a definite salvation experience in your life, there is no way you will continue living in sin because of the new nature of Christ, which is now in you.

If you are still living in sin but claim to be saved, you are not born again yet, dear even if you claim to be so because you still have the old nature of sin that’s still active in your life.

The new nature you experience or inherit when you become born again is made possible by the new heart and the new spirit the Lord gives and promises in Ezekiel 36:26.

The lord further promises in that verse that He removes a stony sinful heart we are born with that makes us inherently sinful or evil and gives us a new heart of flesh that is holy and pure which will enable us to have the new nature of Christ in us.

5. Makes A New Person.

Another important benefit of being born again is that it makes you a new person in Christ due to the new nature of Christ you have inherited after being born of the water and the spirit.

When you become a new person after getting saved, you start living a new life that will be totally different from the old life of sin you once loved when you were not born again yet as all things have now become new in your life as we saw earlier in 2 Corinthians 5:17.

This implies as a new person, you won’t have those old sinful behaviors and tendencies to do evil you once had when the old nature of sin you were born with was still active in your old life.

Otherwise, if you still have the old carnal nature of sin and still sin but claim that you are a new person in Christ, you are just lying to yourself dear, as you haven’t experienced the new birth yet.

In short, your old self or old man hasn’t yet been crucified on the cross as Paul tells us in Romans 6:6 because if you are a new person, your old self will be crucified when you become born again to give way for the new man in Christ who will make you became a new creation.

6. Helps You Live A Godly Life.

You can only live a godly life that’s above your old and past sinful lifestyle if you become a truly born again Christian as living a godly life that’s holy and righteous requires a new nature.

And this new nature can only be imparted to you by Jesus Christ when you become saved and born again with the everlasting life He promises to all those who believe in Him in John 6:47.

On the other hand, if you are not born again, you won’t be able to live a life of godliness because you still have the old nature of sin in you that makes it impossible for you to live godly in this present evil world.

However, when you become born again, a new spiritual birth occurs which makes you have the new nature of Christ in you that enables you to live godly in this ungodly world of sin due to the grace that has been made available to you that Titus 2:11 talks about.

It’s this grace you now have after being born again that will enable you as a Christian to deny all forms of ungodliness and worldly lusts so that you can live godly and soberly in this current perverse generation.

7. Saves You From Hell.

Last but not least, being born again saves you from hell and the wrath to come 1 Thessalonians 1:10 talks about which is as a result of sin coming from the sinful nature we are all born with.

You may be wondering how being born again saves you from hell but as we earlier saw, Jesus Christ clearly tells us in John 3:5 that unless one is born of water symbolized by water baptism and the spirit, the can’t enter God’s kingdom.

And if you don’t go to heaven because you were not born again while on earth, hell is the only other place to be in as there are only two places we will all spend eternity in when we all die which are heaven or hell.

The way becoming born again saves us from hell is that it makes it possible for us to receive eternal life through Jesus Christ and helps us to no longer live a life of sin any more as sin is what damns one to hell in the first place.

That, my dear friend, is how being born again saves you from hell and this is why you need to be born again at all costs if you love your soul and don’t want to be damned in hell prepared for the devil and his angels.
