Wide Is The Road That Leads To Destruction {Real Meaning}

In this post, you are going to find out what the phrase,” wide is the road that leads to destruction,” that Jesus Christ said in Matthews 7:13, 14 in the New Testament.

In the above bible verse, Jesus Christ tells us that we must enter through the narrow gate that leads to life, which only few will ever find.

The above warning from Christ Jesus is a sobering warning to all of us to not enter the broad way that leads to eternal destruction in hell where sadly many are heading.

You need to strive to enter and walk through the narrow road unlike the broad way, the narrow way is not easy and is full of hardships, consecration, self-denial, trials, and suffering which is why few are on that path leading to eternal life in heaven.

With that said, let’s find out what the statement,” wide is the road that leads to destruction,” really means so that you don’t end up on this broad path leading many to eternal ruin.

Jesus’s Sermon On The Broad Way.

In Matthews 7:13,14, our Lord Jesus Christ describes two gates that exist in this world which are the strait gate and the broad road. He further tells us in the above verses that the former unlike the strait gate leads to destruction in hell fire.

Jesus Christ told his disciples that they must enter the narrow way that leads to life eternal in heaven, which only few will ever find. The broad way here as Jesus Christ describes it is the way of the multitudes.

This broad road unlike the narrow path is wide because it accommodates everyone and all kinds of lifestyles. All manner of sins be it homosexuality, lesbianism, sexual immorality, adultery, drunkenness, etc. are accepted here.

If you are a person on this wide road leading many to destruction, you are free to do as your corrupt sinful flesh desires. You can sin, however, you want without any restrictions.

For this reason, many due to their love for sin are on this broad path. On the other hand, few are on the straight and narrow way that leads to life eternal in heaven, as only few are willing to forsake their life of sin to follow righteousness.

The broad way is also a way advocated by many false teachers and false prophets who teach false doctrines and hate teaching the truth about sin, righteousness, and holiness of which without, now will ever see the Lord or enter heaven (Hebrews 12:14).

Many Are On The Broadway As They Love Sin.

If you are a person who’s on the broad way, you will hate the truth and love living a life of sin and self-indulgence like many fake Christians and believers are.

So, when Jesus Christ said in Matthews 7:13 that,” wide is the gate that leads to destruction and many that go in thereat,” He simply meant that there are many people who are on the broad way leading to destruction.

He also implied that one of the characteristics of the broad road is that it’s wide which is why many are on that path to their eternal doom and destruction in hell due to their love of sin (1 Thessalonians 1:9).

One may ask if many are on the broad way leading to destruction, why can’t God save everyone? The answer to that question is simple. God is willing to save anyone who sincerely comes to Him in repentance via His Son, Jesus Christ.

However, in as much as God wants everyone to be saved and is not willing that any should perish as 2 Peter 3:8-10 tells us, He will not force His salvation and love gift of eternal life as we are free moral agents with free will.

Many Reject The Salvation Offer.

Implying that, salvation is strictly a personal thing and something you need to desire for yourself. Sadly many are rejecting the offer of salvation today thinking they are fine and that they don’t need to be saved from anything.

This can be clearly seen when you try to preach the good news of salvation as many will laugh and scoff at you. Many will say that they don’t need your Jesus and that you are a Jesus freak.

However, God’s word is clear in Revelations 21:8 that all those who reject God’s love gift of salvation and eternal life through Christ Jesus due to their unbelief and lack of faith will have to face eternal death in the lake of fire.

Eternal death here simply means eternal punishment and eternal separation from God in the lake of fire, which will be disastrous for any person who ends up there.

If you are reading this, I urge you not to reject God’s love gift of salvation and be saved today if you are not saved yet as tomorrow isn’t promised.

Many are on the broad way leading to eternal destruction in hell not because God can’t save them but due to their love for sin and their willful rejection of salvation.

Why Few Are On The Narrow Way?

Matthews 7:14 tells us that only few will ever find the narrow road that leads to life as many have willfully chosen death due to their love of sin and evil doing.

Few are on the narrow path because unlike the wide gate, the narrow way is not as accommodating as the broad way is as you just can’t do as you please or live however you want.

The narrow way is a high way of holiness and righteousness. No baggage of sin can be accepted there. It is also a way that’s full of self-denial, restrictions, suffering, and persecution many are unwilling to endure.

2 Timothy 3:12 tells us that anyone who desires to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. Due to this, many are just unwilling to suffer persecution and endure hardships for Christ’s sake that come with being His follower.

You need to understand that if you are to enter the narrow gate that leads to life, you need to be holy and unspotted from this present evil world.

Sadly, many because they love their sin are unwilling to live a life of holiness and righteousness as it makes their sinful flesh cringe and uncomfortable. These people say that you can’t be holy and none can be holy.

The Narrow Way Demands Holiness.

Forgetting that in the old testament in Leviticus 11:44,45 God commands us to be holy because He’s holy and has called us unto the high way of holiness and righteousness.

God cannot tell us to do things He knows are impossible for us to do. The fact that the Lord asks us to be holy is because He knows by His grace, it’s possible.

If you are a person who thinks that holiness is impossible, it’s because you love your sins too much to let them go and are unwilling to forsake them which is why you say holy living is untenable.

However, you need to understand that without holiness as Hebrews 12:14 tells us, forget about making heaven. If you are a true born-again Christian who understands what true Christianity is all about, you won’t find it hard to live a holy life.

The reason for this is when you become truly born gain with a genuine salvation experience; you will experience the new birth with results in the new nature that Ephesians 4:24 tells us created in the righteousness and likeness of God.

It’s this new nature in you that will enable you to live a holy life that’s free from sin and the pollutions of this world as well as hate the sins you once loved when your old sinful nature was active before you became saved.

Final Thoughts.

I hope the above post on wide is the road that leads to destruction has finally helped you understand what the broad way is all about and why many are in it.

My prayer is after reading this; you don’t end up being in the wide gate leading many to eternal ruin but be on the narrow way that leads to life by choosing to live a holy life.
